Sturt Street Bus Stops Operational Monday

City of Mount Gambier has installed two new bus stops on Sturt Street. These will become the main bus stops for the city centre, replacing the existing stop on Ferrers Street from Monday 15 December 2025 for all 1291, 1292, 1293 and 1295 services.

General Manager City Infrastructure Barbara Cernovskis said the relocation will enhance both safety and accessibility for passengers using the city bus service.

"The new bus stops will better support the LinkSA city bus service. This change will streamline operations and limit bus movements on Ferrers Street to those servicing the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre," Ms Cernovskis said.

The project is part of Council's ongoing advocacy work to improve regional access to public transport.

"Council has worked closely with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport and LinkSA to deliver this outcome, as part of the Regional Public Transport Review," Ms Cernovskis said.

The new shelters have been designed to meet Disability Discrimination Act requirements, with larger accessible spaces for wheelchairs, walkers and prams.

Seating has been constructed from recycled materials sourced from the old railway lands, and a small glass section on the western side of each shelter allows passengers to see approaching buses.

Display signage will be installed soon to provide information on future events.

"We chose a larger roof space to accommodate more people and reduce rain exposure, while ensuring compliance standards were met," Ms Cernovskis said.

The multi-agency approach required careful planning and coordination, which contributed to some delays.

"We needed to ensure all agencies agreed on routes, dates, times and compliance requirements, which took longer than anticipated," Ms Cernovskis said.

Further service updates and possible route changes will be considered by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) via the Regional Public Transport Review.
