Submissions open on draft Creative Places Strategy

From dancers and designers, to poets, painters, performers and playwrights - local creative people are at the heart of the draft Creative Places Strategy, which will invite submissions in May.

Surf Coast Shire Council endorsed the draft strategy at its April Council meeting, and will welcome submissions until 28 May.

The draft Creative Places Strategy has a vision for the Surf Coast to be a flourishing creative destination by 2031.

"The strategy's vision also sees the Surf Coast as a place where creative people of all pursuits will be enabled and equipped to enhance our sense of place and identity, and their contribution to the environment, wellbeing and a vibrant economy will be understood and valued," Cr Gary Allen said.

Informed by a survey which attracted 114 submissions and Council's People Place Future consultation, the draft 2023-2031 strategy has three strategic areas - place, people and profile. It features seven goals to support a thriving creative economy.

"The previous Creative Places Strategy has laid the foundations for success, particularly after the Surf Coast Shire was recognised as one of regional Australia's top creative hotspots," Cr Allen said.

"We want to grow our exceptional reputation, and continue to showcase the Surf Coast's creative diversity and the incredible benefits it brings to our communities.

"The Creative Places Strategy 2023-31 will map out how Council can deliver our ambitions - from activations on high profile sites, to promoting our best and brightest to a broad audience, to advocating for and developing regional cultural tourism experiences such as the Surf Coast Cultural Centre.

"Importantly, the strategy will help us achieve goals in a sustainable manner that maximises resources, partnerships and outcomes."

Submissions on the draft Creative Places Strategy can be made from 1 May via surfcoast.vic.gov.au/CreativePlaces. Submissions close 28 May.

"Whether you're a member of the local creative industry, or someone who soaks up performances, exhibitions or events, I encourage you to view the draft strategy and provide feedback," Cr Allen said.

Submissions will inform Council as it considers the final Creative Places Strategy, scheduled for the July Council meeting.
