The Allan Labor Government's Suburban Rail Loop will slash congestion, cut travel times and connect two of Australia's largest universities to trains.
Advanced transport modelling has revealed how the landmark project will slash travel times across Melbourne - making it easier and faster to get around so you spend less time in traffic or at the station.
Premier Jacinta Allan and Minister for Suburban Rail Loop Harriet Shing today released SRL Travel Time Savings report at the SRL Burwood site.
The station site is across the road from Deakin University - giving students and staff a direct train service for the first time.
The SRL Travel Time Savings report shows how Victorians will have their journey times slashed.
- A student from Cheltenham will be able to travel to Deakin University in just 19 minutes by public transport - a saving of 40 minutes.
- A journey for a nurse living in Burwood and working at Box Hill Hospital will only take 3.5 minutes.
- A student studying in Caulfield will also shave 17 minutes off a 39-minute journey to Glen Waverley to visit friends and family.
- A patient from Frankston will slash 15 minutes off their trip to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, with a seamless interchange at Southland Station to get to work.
- Cheltenham to Monash will take just ten minutes door-to-door, compared to around 34 minutes driving.
- Students from Laverton can get to Deakin in 60 minutes using SRL, versus up to 79 minutes in the car.
SRL will slash congestion across Melbourne by taking 600,000 cars off the road every day, as catching the train will become a better alternative than getting behind the wheel.
As Australia's largest housing project, SRL will also help deliver 70,000 homes around the stations, giving young people the opportunity to live on the doorstep of world-class transport, jobs and services.
No matter where you live - whether it's Frankston, Footscray or Fawkner - SRL will mean faster and easier journeys, creating more time to do the things you love rather than being stuck in traffic or navigating complicated trips.
Once open, 70,000 passengers every day will save time while travelling on the SRL - getting them to work, school or home faster and taking thousands of cars off the road.
Construction of SRL is creating up to 8,000 jobs and works are underway at all six station sites.
Construction at Burwood is progressing well with crews supported by two massive cranes and a huge excavator focused on excavation of the TBM launch site which is now 15 metres deep.
Next year, two TBMs will be launched from Burwood to dig a tunnel towards Glen Waverley and later another two will dig the tunnels toward Box Hill.
