Five Sunshine Coast residents have been recognised in the Australia Day 2021 Honours list for their contributions to marine science, environmental conservation, paramedicine and to community.
Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated the recipients, saying their awards, announced by the Governor General, reflected decades of service.
"Each of these recipients has worked tirelessly to add to the fabric of our community and protect our environment through research and conservation and their commitment to going above and beyond, which has been recognised by their peers," Mayor Jamieson said.
"They've gone about their professional and community work, not because they seek accolades, but because they want to make a difference."
Dr Carden Wallace AM of Mt Coolum has been recognised for significant service to marine science, and to museums and galleries.
The Queensland Museum Emeritus Principal Scientist has authored or co-authored more than 130 scientific publications and undertaken significant research into reefs, corals and fossil corals.
Mr Kenneth Mewburn AM of Golden Beach has been recognised for service to conservation and the environment.
"The former president of The Take Action for Pumicestone Passage and member of Council's Community Reference Group for our UNESCO Biosphere Reserve nomination, Mr Mewburn's dedication to the environment – and the Pumicestone Passage in particular – has provided a community voice in the protection and management of this important catchment and Sunshine Coast natural asset," Mayor Jamieson said.
Mr Raymond Bange OAM of Currimundi has been recognised for service to paramedicine, to education, and to the community.
The University of the Sunshine Coast Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Paramedicine has an extensive background in healthcare policy, governance and corporate strategy and has been involved in many aspects of Paramedicine's evolution.
Mr Gordon Barratt OAM of Buderim has been recognised for service to children with a disability and mental health issues, and their families.
The founding and board member of the Connect Community Plus Kids and Committee Member of The Board Meeting Surf Charity since 2007 has impacted the lives of many in our community, providing support and raising much needed funding.
"Mr Barratt and his fellow Connect Community Plus Kids board members have put the spotlight on engaging our community to recognise and deal with issues surrounding disadvantage," Mayor Jamieson said.
"Strengthening connection, inclusion and opportunity for all people is pivotal to building a strong community here on the Sunshine Coast."
Mrs Norma McLeod OAM of Maleny has been recognised for service to the Maleny community through her work with, and commitment to, Centre for Retirement Living (Blue Care), Maleny Show Society, Maleny Garden Club, Maleny Floral Art Group and the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, to name just a few.
"Each of the Sunshine Coast recipients has worked tirelessly to improve the safety and well-being of our community and protecting and enhancing our environment through their dedication and commitment," Mayor Jamieson said.
"They've made a difference to our residents, our children and young people and visitors to our region over many years.
"Thanks to their long-standing contributions – and that of their fellow award recipients across Australia – our country is in a better place and their efforts are deservedly recognised.
"As a strong community, we have come together to face the challenges presented by the global pandemic, and I'm truly humbled by the efforts and grateful to those people who continue to contribute to our community in the face of those challenges.
"On behalf of our Sunshine Coast Council, I offer congratulations to all Australia Day Honours award recipients.
"Our community thanks you for giving so much to so many."
