A region-wide set of design guidelines which will help promote and maintain the Sunshine Coast's distinct characteristics is being developed by Sunshine Coast Council with the assistance of the design industry, private sector and the broader community.
Council is inviting the community to have their say on what they love about the Sunshine Coast, as part of the initial consultation phase to inform the draft Sunshine Coast Design Strategy's development.
The draft strategy will be available for comment in mid-late 2019.
The Sunshine Coast Design Strategy will establish how design characteristics are translated into the look and feel of buildings, streets and landscapes.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the strategy would be a resource for council, the community, designers and the development industry to inform planning, guide decision making and inspire design which reflects elements of our Sunshine Coast.
"Ultimately, the Design Strategy will capture the Sunshine Coast's special qualities and provide a platform for how they are reflected throughout our communities now and into the future," Mayor Jamieson said.
"It also aims to raise the bar for the quality of buildings, streets and places that are being built, so they respond to our climate, reflect our local character and help achieve our goal of being Australia's most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative."
Once developed, the final strategy will comprise:
- a design vision and design principles – reflecting the feedback from the community engagement process and the design vision and principles for the area
- design guidelines – specific guidance and technical detail to assist the public and the private sector to achieve the desired outcomes and standards
- actions – an action and implementation plan.
"Council has produced some fantastic, award-winning projects in recent years like the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre, Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden Arts and Ecology Centre, the Palmwoods streetscape upgrade and Beerwah Town Centre," Mayor Jamieson said.
"These buildings and places are loved by the community and it's this sort of high quality design we want to see more of throughout our Sunshine Coast.
"This is everyone's opportunity to provide input to the qualities and features of the Sunshine Coast that the community would like to see reflected in the design of buildings and public areas for the next 20 years."
