Two new National Recovery Plans have been released to help protect and recover Australian species-greater gliders and the ghost bat.
The plans set out priority actions to:
- protect and restore habitat
- reduce threats to the species
- support their long-term recovery.
Greater gliders are threatened by:
- habitat loss, particularly the loss of hollow-bearing trees
- bushfires
- climate change.
Ghost bats face threats including:
- loss and disturbance of their roosts and feeding habitats
- invasive species such as cats and cane toads
- entanglement in barbed wire.
Developed in partnership with state and territory governments, the plans outline practical steps to:
- protect habitat
- support healthy populations
- improve our understanding of these unique native mammals.
These plans are an important step towards securing a future for greater gliders and ghost bats in the wild.
