Supporting health and wellbeing of our Correctional Officers

Elise Archer,Minister for Corrections

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is continuing to address the challenges within our prison service with the safety and wellbeing of staff, prisoners and the community remaining a top priority.

That's why, from next week, a Wellbeing Support Program will be implemented for the Tasmania Prison Service staff that will provide them with a range of services to improve their health and wellbeing.

We know that working in the TPS can be challenging due to the unique nature of the work involved, and this will ensure our hard-working staff have the right supports they need to deal with any challenges they face.

The services will be both on-line and face-to-face, and will include physical health and wellbeing checks, functional health checks, mental health wellness checks, incident support, case management services, and education and training programs.

The online resources will be complemented by a team of specialists with skills in psychology and case management to ensure staff can access comprehensive and flexible support in a way that best meets their needs.

Participation in the program is optional and staff can still access external counselling and coaching services if they prefer.

The program will be based on the successful My Pulse Program which was developed for the Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management but has been adapted to meet the specific needs of the Department of Justice.

Following the initial roll out within the TPS, the program will subsequently be made available to all Department of Justice staff over the coming months to ensure staff have access to this valuable program.
