Supporting Inclusive Policing For LGBTIQA+ Communities

South Australia Police (SAPOL) has launched its revised LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officer (LLO) Network, reinforcing its commitment to respectful engagement, inclusion and community safety for LGBTIQA+ people across the state.

The updated network gives the community better access to trained officers who understand LGBTIQA+ issues and can offer informed, respectful support.

Building on the former Gay and Lesbian Liaison Officer (GLLO) initiative, the LLO Network reflects SAPOL's ongoing work to ensure policing services remain accessible, inclusive and responsive to the needs of diverse communities.

LLOs are SAPOL employees who volunteer for the role and receive specialised training to provide informed support to LGBTIQA+ community members and SAPOL employees. They act as a point of contact, support community engagement, and help build trust and understanding between police and the community.

Police Security Officer Kate said volunteering for the role was motivated by an understanding of the complex history between policing and LGBTIQA+ communities.

"The privilege of being an LLO, combined with the training provided, has given me confidence to address questions from my peers and to educate others about the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people.

"SAPOL's commitment to supporting the LLO network speaks volumes about its dedication to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all," Kate said.

The launch of the LLO Network is a key action under the Pride at SAPOL LGBTIQA+ Strategy 2025-2030, which outlines SAPOL's vision for a workplace and community where all individuals feel safe, respected and confident to engage with police.

Community members can connect with an LLO by emailing [email protected]with their name, contact details, and suburb or postcode, or by visiting their local police station.
