Supporting men's welfare and building community networks

18 November 2023

Improving life outcomes for all Territorians is a Territory Labor Government priority, this includes creating inclusive, safe and thriving communities.

The government has today launched the Northern Territory Men's Places Policy and Program as part of the NT Gender Equality Action Plan 2022-25.

The Policy and Program aims to support the delivery of activities and programs at men's places, and improve networks connecting men's places across the Territory.

Men's places play an important role in improving the health and emotional wellbeing of men, and forming community connections and support networks.

The Policy and Program intends to reinforce the work already being undertaken by Men's Sheds, men's places, men's peer-to-peer support programs and men's healing places.

Community-led activities and programs underpin the policy, so that they are designed to meet the needs of the community. It seeks to promote positive male role models and encourage peer support activities, parenting programs, skills development and male health and wellbeing.

To support men's places, the NT Government is providing $100,000 each year for Men's Places Grants of up to $10,000 for programs which promote the objectives of the policy.

Grant applications open on International Men's Day, Saturday 19 November, and close on 31 January 2023. To apply, visit grantsnt.nt.gov.au here.

Quotes from Minister for Equality and Inclusion, Lauren Moss:

"I am excited about what can be achieved through this program which was developed through extensive consultations with those it will directly support.

"This includes men's sheds, men's places, men's healing programs, and other community stakeholders to support positive male role modelling.

"Men's places can provide a safe place to access resources and facilitate knowledge exchange and mentoring, and I encourage men's place groups to apply for grants to support programs for their local communities."
