Supporting Mildura's need for speed at Timmis Speedway

Liberal Party Victoria

Mildura has an impressive motorsport pedigree, with some of the world's best drivers hailing from Sunraysia.

To support the current, as well as entice the future generation of drivers, a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will provide $675,000 towards a major facility upgrade to Timmis Speedway.

The club usually holds eight meetings and hosts more than 15,000 fans each year, welcoming an average of 1,800 competitors and spectators at each event.

Timmis Speedway was forced to suspend its upcoming season as the venue requires funding to upgrade the lighting, electricity and fencing.

Under the Liberals and Nationals, these upgrades will be delivered so that the many volunteers and competitors can get back to doing what they do best.

Additional works could include track drainage, increased car park accessibility and capacity, car park lighting, and main entrance gate and fence installation.

Leader of the Liberal Party, Matt Guy, said it was an important investment for the future of motorsports in Mildura.

"Mildura has such a strong connection to motorsport, and this investment will only make it stronger," Mr Guy said.

"We'll make the track safer and more enjoyable for competitors, and provide a better experience for those on the sidelines cheering along."

Liberal Candidate for Mildura, Paul Matheson, said the commitment would bring thousands of competitors and fans back to Mildura once again.

"Delivering these upgrades will mean Timmis Speedway will become one of three five-star safety rated tracks in Australia, and inject millions of dollars into the local economy," Mr Matheson said.

"I've met with the locals, and look forward to welcoming the thousands of visitors Speedway brings back to the region."

The Nationals Candidate for Mildura, Jade Benham, said the build would ensure the club could get back to racing faster.

"Timmis Speedway has been long forgotten in favour of other sports and projects, but this investment enables the club to return to racing and secure the future viability of the sport and venue," Ms Benham said.

"As a not-for-profit, it is important for government to do all it can in supporting our grassroots sport and motorsports clubs."
