Expressions of Interest for the appointment of a new judge of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, following the forthcoming retirement of Justice Robert Pearce, have been extended.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Corrections and Rehabilitation, Guy Barnett, thanked Justice Pearce for his esteemed service to Tasmania.
"Justice Pearce has made a significant contribution to Tasmania since his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2013, and I thank him for his longstanding contribution to the administration of justice in our State," the Attorney-General said.
"The Supreme Court is Tasmania's highest court and plays a vital role in upholding the rule of law, administering justice, and maintaining public confidence in our legal system.
"Our Government is seeking expressions of interest from highly capable and experienced members of the legal profession who possess the integrity, independence, judgement and professional excellence required for judicial office."
Eligible candidates include Australian lawyers of at least 10 years' standing who have attained the age of 35 years, serving or former judges from specified Australian and New Zealand courts, and serving or former Tasmanian magistrates.
The appointment process will be conducted in accordance with the Tasmanian Government's Protocol for Judicial Appointments, which provides for a merit-based and transparent assessment process.
