Surf Rescue in Byron Bay Leaves One Dead, Another Hospitalised

A man has died and another man has been hospitalised after they were pulled from the surf at a beach on the state's Far North Coast.

About 1pm today (Monday 2 January 2023), emergency services were called to New Brighton Beach, south of Byron Bay, following reports that a man collapsed after returning to shore, and another man had been pulled from the water unresponsive.

Surf Lifesavers and an off-duty nurse pulled the man from the water and performed CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, the 27-year-old could not be revived.

A 28-year-old man has been taken to Tweed Hospital in a stable condition.

Officers attached to Tweed/Byron Police District attended and have commenced inquiries into the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
