Survey Examines Aircraft Electronic Visibility in Australia

Electronic conspicuity refers to technologies that help pilots detect and be detected by other aircraft, using equipment such as transponders and automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) to share information about an aircraft's position and identity. The survey received 1,662 voluntary responses covering 3,037 unique aircraft, including VH-registered and sport aviation aircraft such as RAAus-registered, glider and experimental aircraft.

It focused primarily on visual flight rules (VFR) operations, examining the rates and types of electronic conspicuity equipment in use, changes in equipage since 2021 and factors influencing uptake.

The survey was distributed through 78 organisations and supported by 6 industry groups and bodies. Responses were assessed against known fleet populations to estimate equipage rates and indicative locations for technologies including transponders, ADS-B and electronic flight bags (EFBs).
