Swan Hill Unveils Two New Buildings

Official opening

Yesterday, marked an historic moment for Swan Hill Rural City Council as together Senator Michelle Ananda-Rajah and Mayor Cr Stuart King cut the ribbon, officially opening two remarkable new facilities: the Art Gallery of Swan Hill and the Swan Hill Tourism and Cultural Experience Centre.

The projects were delivered through the Our Region, Our Rivers initiative, which secured $16.8 million in Regional Growth Fund support in 2019. With contributions from local councils, this translated into a total investment of $34.6 million across 29 projects spanning seven councils and two states, coordinated under Swan Hill Rural City Council.

One of the flagship projects, a $13.2 million investment for Swan Hill, was initially planned as a single multipurpose building within the Pioneer Settlement precinct. Following Pioneer Settlement's nomination and inclusion on the Victorian Heritage Register in March 2022, delays occurred. Council successfully negotiated a project extension and amendment, enabling the construction of two purpose-built buildings instead of one.

Senator Ananda-Rajah said these projects were a testament to hard work and a deep commitment to the region - a region she described as a true powerhouse.

"Man does not live on food alone. We also need nourishment for the soul, found in the sharing of stories, in connection, and in places where we come together. It is spaces like these that chronicle who we are. They become the keepers of our memories - not only for this generation, but for those who follow," Senator Ananda-Rajah said.

Council's Mayor, Cr Stuart King, said it was an absolute honour to celebrate this milestone, highlighting the years of vision, perseverance, and community engagement that made today possible.

"These are more than buildings. They are spaces for conversation, inspiration, learning, and connection. They embody our commitment to culture, history, and the arts, while creating welcoming environments where people of all ages and backgrounds feel they belong," Cr King said.

Cr King acknowledged the leadership and dedication of former councillors, council staff, architects, builders, project teams, and volunteers, whose contributions are "embedded in every wall, every space, and every detail" of the new facilities.

"The original vision has evolved into something even more remarkable. Through patience, persistence, and a shared commitment to excellence, we now have two outstanding community assets our region can truly be proud of," he said.

Cr King concluded that the Art Gallery of Swan Hill and the Swan Hill Tourism and Cultural Experience Centre are more than community buildings - they are a testament to our history, culture, creativity and connection.

"These spaces will not only preserve and celebrate our history but will also spark imagination, foster learning, and bring people together for generations to come. They stand as a testament to what can be achieved when vision, dedication, and community spirit come together - and they ensure that Swan Hill's story will continue to inspire, engage, and unite our community well into the future," he said.
