Swift Justice for Offenders: TIG-ER Taskforce Acts

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government's criminal justice reforms are delivering swift justice and safer communities, with new court data confirming that new measures are driving record case finalisations. This progress is strengthened by our Government's innovative TIG-ER Taskforce, which is cutting through the backlog left by the former Labor Government.

The latest Northern Territory Local Court data shows that some 24,801 cases were finalised in the year to October 2025, ensuring offenders are dealt with faster, victims receive certainty sooner, and communities are better protected.

Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said the figures demonstrate that our Government is delivering exactly what they promised to do; putting victims first by fast-tracking cases and ensuring real consequences for offenders.

"After nearly a decade of Labor's neglect and chronic under-resourcing of the justice system, the CLP Government pledged to fix the mess, and we are keeping our promise."

Our Government has implemented the strongest law and order reforms in a generation - including stronger bail laws. These crucial changes naturally increased the number of new cases lodged, and the number of offenders held on remand, which reached its peak in April 2025. Despite this, our measures have seen a 10% reduction in offenders held on remand to October 2025, meaning that more offenders are facing consequences sooner, with 58% of adult prisoners serving custodial sentences.

"In our year of action, certainty and security, reforms like Declan's Law, stronger bails laws, and our TIG-ER Taskforce are ensuring offenders are held to account, not left waiting in the system," Minister Boothby said. "When cases move quickly, victims are not left in limbo, police are freed up to focus on frontline duties, and Territorians are safer."

This success follows strong crime statistics released last month, showing more than 1,800 less victims of crime compared to the same time last year, a clear sign the CLP Government's Reducing Crime Strategy is working. The TIG-ER Taskforce forms part of the Territory's $1.5 billion Law and Order Budget - the largest ever - alongside stronger bail laws, and increased penalties.

"This is about restoring confidence in the justice system," Minister Boothby said.

"We are delivering certainty for victims, consequences for offenders and security for our communities, and we will continue strengthening it as part of our commitment to reduce crime and restore the Territory lifestyle."
