A Newtown man is expected to appear before the NSW Bail Division Local Court today (5 February, 2026) charged for allegedly making an online threat towards a foreign head of state and Internationally Protected Person.
The AFP's National Security Investigations (NSI) team began an investigation in January, 2026, following a report of a threat made on a social media platform.
Investigators allegedly linked the man, 19, to the threat.
The AFP, with assistance from the NSW Police Security Investigations Unit, executed a search warrant at a home in Newtown yesterday (4 February, 2026). Items seized included a mobile phone and drug paraphernalia.
The AFP charged the man with one count of using a carriage to make a threat to kill, contrary to section 474.15(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth). He was refused police bail.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.
AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia's social cohesion, including the targeting of the Jewish community.
