A black ribbon will be projected onto the sails of the Sydney Opera House on Thursday night in solidarity with Türkiye and Syria as the two nations continue to count the toll of the devastating earthquakes on Monday.

More than 7,000 people are estimated to have been killed by the two earthquakes, which impacted Türkiye and Syria and surrounding nations, with many more injured and thousands involved in the search and rescue effort.

The black ribbon symbolises remembrance and mourning and will be projected onto the Sydney Opera House from 8.30pm on Thursday, in a show of solidarity with the people of Türkiye and Syria.

NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said the impacts of the earthquakes were being felt across the world, including in NSW

"Our thoughts go to everyone impacted by the earthquakes including those here in NSW who have loved ones in the affected areas," Mr Perrottet said.

"The immensity of this tragedy cannot be understated - the loss of life is utterly heartbreaking and has touched all of us."

Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure said the projection on the Sydney Opera House sails was a small gesture to show that NSW stands with communities and the people of Türkiye and Syria and surrounding nations.

"As a multicultural society, when events like this happen we all feel it, and we all rally together to support those affected," Mr Coure said.

"I want to express my sympathy for those with family and friends affected by this terrible tragedy, and we stand in solidarity with the authorities working to support recovery efforts."

The black ribbon will be projected on the Sydney Opera House sails until midnight Thursday 9 February.
