Sydney's transport history comes to life this June long weekend

Historic steam vessels on Sydney Harbour will be the newest edition to this year's Transport Heritage Expo, as the Australian National Maritime Museum and Sydney Heritage Fleet join in on the celebrations.

"The Transport Heritage Expo brings to life our state's rich transport history in the heart of Sydney with the excitement of steam locomotives, electric trains, railmotors and vintage double-decker buses," said Andrew Moritz, CEO, Transport Heritage NSW.

"This year, we're thrilled to welcome onboard the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Sydney Heritage Fleet for what will be our biggest Transport Heritage Expo to date."

The Sydney Heritage Fleet's 117-year-old steam launch Lady Hopetoun will operate shuttle rides from Darling Harbour, while visitors will also have an opportunity to see the Maritime Museum's 119-year-old Steam Yacht Ena in steam.

Ticket holders can hop on a vintage double-decker bus at Central Station for a transfer to the museum wharf, combining two modes of heritage transport into one unforgettable experience.

Other feature activities visitors can enjoy during this year's Expo include:

  • The Great Train Race

See two historic steam locomotives race side-by-side from Central to Strathfield (Saturday morning 8 June only).

  • Steam Train Rides

Settle back in 1930's style as a historic steam locomotive huffs and puffs through the suburbs during an incredible 1-hour journey. Steam train rides will operate eight times per day with locomotives 6029 and 3265 from Central Station to Hurstville and return.

  • Railmotor Rides

Step inside a charming CPH railmotor from the 1920s and enjoy a ride back in time on Sydney metropolitan freight lines through Chullora and Enfield or a trip to Sydney Olympic Park and return. Railmotor rides will operate six times per day throughout the weekend.

  • Vintage Electric Train Rides

Enjoy the atmospheric lights and sounds of our vintage electric train as it takes you on a 1-hour trip from Central Station, around the City Circle and return. Three vintage electric train rides will operate daily.

  • Vintage Bus Rides

For a gold coin donation, jump aboard one of several former NSW Government vintage double-decker buses for a loop around the Sydney CBD. Shuttle rides will operate every 5-10 minutes daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

  • Mortuary Station Visits

Visit the only remaining example of a Victorian railway funerary station in Australia, as Mortuary Station celebrates its 150th anniversary with public viewings. The station is open throughout the long weekend from 10.00am to 4.00pm

Plus, there will be heritage displays at Central Station and other activities available for all ages.

The Transport Heritage Expo operates Saturday 8, Sunday 9 and Monday 10 June.
