Targeted Amendment Bill Tabled in Tasmania

The Local Government Targeted Amendment Bill has been tabled in the House of Assembly.

The Bill represents some of the largest reforms to the local government sector in years, including changes to councillor numbers and allowances.

Minister for Local Government, Kerry Vincent, said this Bill is the result of years of close work with the local government sector.

"The role of councillors has evolved beyond rates, roads and rubbish," Minister Vincent said.

"There is a need to better support them in their roles, and to modernise the legislation to ensure we achieve this.

"The Bill looks to provide better avenues to manage serious councillor misconduct, more transparency and better support for councils across the state.

"I look forward to the Bill's progression through the Parliament."

Attributable to President of the Local Government Association of Tasmania, Mick Tucker:

"The local government sector welcomes the tabling of this Bill. It contains a number of important reforms to support councils, and we look forward to working with the Government on their implementation"
