New high-tech tasers with greater firing range to be rolled out to NT Police under a major investment in the Territory's frontline police by the Finocchiaro CLP Government
More than 750 next-generation TASER 10 devices to be rolled out as part of a $6.5 million investment in the safety of NT Police and the community.
Pilot deployments will be rolled out in Alice Springs, Katherine and Wadeye, followed by a staged rollout focusing on first-response patrol officers and high-risk specialist areas.
New high-tech tasers with nearly double the firing range and the ability to fire 10 individual probes without needing to reload will be rolled out to NT Police under a major investment in the Territory's frontline police by the Finocchiaro CLP Government.
More than 750 next-generation TASER 10 devices will be progressively rolled out as part of a $6.5 million investment in the safety of NT Police and the community.
Pilot deployments will be initially rolled out in Alice Springs, Katherine and Wadeye, followed by a staged rollout across Commands, focusing on first-response patrol officers and high-risk specialist areas.
Chief Minister and Minister for Police Lia Finocchiaro said the introduction of the TASER 10 would give frontline police more options, greater distance and more time to safely resolve high-risk situations.
"This is first and foremost about officer and community safety. Police regularly deal with volatile, unpredictable and potentially life-threatening situations," the Chief Minister said.
"TASER 10 gives trained officers another option to safely resolve those incidents and, where circumstances allow, avoid escalation to a higher level of force.
"Our police put themselves in harm's way to keep Territorians safe, so they need the right tools to deal with dangerous and unpredictable situations, and TASER 10 is a significant step forward in less-lethal technology."
The Commissioner of the Northern Territory Police Force Martin Dole said the new devices represent a significant upgrade in frontline policing capability.
"Our current TASER X2s have been in service for more than a decade and this new model provides a substantial capability improvement, including greater range, individually targeted probes, up to 10 probe deployments, improved digital management and new warning features," the Commissioner said.
"Work has begun to train members, implement the new asset management system, update policy and governance arrangements and progressively retire existing X2 devices, without reducing our frontline capability."
The TASER 10s will have a vastly improved maximum range of 13.7 metres compared to just 7.6 metres for the existing X2, giving police more time and space to de-escalate dangerous incidents.
The new technology allows officers to fire 10 individual probes without the need to reload, rather than just firing two probes simultaneously. This gives officers greater control over probe placement and a better chance to establish an effective connection if an initial probe misses the target.
The Chief Minister said the controlled rollout would ensure the technology was supported by appropriate training, policy, governance and infrastructure.
"This is deliberately a controlled transition, not simply an equipment swap. Training, policy, governance, infrastructure and asset management all need to be in place before the new capability is deployed more broadly," the Chief Minister said.
"This is a significant investment in the safety of our police and the community they serve. That is what Territorians expect from their Government and their Police Force."
TASER 10 incorporates a bright pulsing light and audible warning alert that can be activated without deploying a probe, providing police with another opportunity to de-escalate a situation before force is used.
TASER 10 training will be provided to existing officers and will also be incorporated into Police College recruit training.
Existing TASER X2 devices will remain operational during the transition and will be progressively withdrawn as trained members and commands move to TASER 10.
