Tasmanian employment remains strong

Michael Ferguson, Treasurer

The latest Labour Force data shows that more Tasmanians are employed than ever before, with 291,200 Tasmanians in jobs.

Contrary to what the Shadow Treasurer, Dr Shane Broad, would have Tasmanians believe, this actually represents an increase of almost 500 Tasmanians in jobs.

Dr Broad has once again shown that he doesn't understand finances or economics and has falsely interpreted Australian Bureau of Statistics data as a decrease in employment, which was actually just a revision of the data.

Treasurer, Michael Ferguson, said Dr Broad has also overlooked that Treasury's own data release that says, "Trend data are recommended for smaller jurisdictions like Tasmania."

"The data also shows that the number of women employed has hit a new high of 140,700, an increase of 200," Mr Ferguson said.

"We are maintaining historically low unemployment rates, at 4 per cent which is unchanged from last month.

"There are more Tasmanians in jobs than ever before, and they are being paid more than they ever have.

"It is understandable that Labor would try to paint our job statistics this way, considering that same statistics show 56,100 more Tasmanians in jobs since we took over from the disastrous Labor-Green Government.

"Tasmanians remember what it was like to live under the tax-first-ask-later Labor-Green Government. Tasmanians remember the State being plunged into a recession in 2012-13. They oversaw unemployment rates of 7.9 per cent. They remember more than 19,000 unemployed Tasmanians.

"The latest job figures for Tasmania should be celebrated, and Labor's misrepresentation of the data shows only their own failure to understand basic statistics.

"If Labor can't manage to figure out how to read basic statistics, how can they be trusted to manage Tasmania's finances and economy?"
