Tasmanian Gov, Salmon Industry Unite to Shield Maugean Skate

Jo Palmer, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

The Rockliff Liberal Government 100 per cent backs Tasmania's salmon industry.

The salmon industry is an economic and jobs powerhouse, especially in our regional communities.

It is environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and well managed.

We're proud of the industry and every single worker it directly and indirectly employs.

Our Government together with the industry recognises the importance of the Maugean Skate, and the obligations we all have to protect and conserve this unique species.

I welcome the industry's recent announcement to invest $750,000 to help save the endangered Maugean Skate.

The salmon industry can coexist, and we do not believe that it is a one or the other proposition.

I call on Tasmanian Labor to stand up for our salmon industry. It's time for Labor to stop the rhetoric and actually step up and back this industry and tell their Federal colleagues how sustainable and environmentally responsible it is.

I can tell you what we're doing – we're supporting the industry, we're supporting Tasmanians. You always know where we stand
