Tasmanian industry and jobs benefit from significant Nyrstar local spend

Nyrstar Australia

More than 330 Tasmanian businesses employing hundreds of Tasmanians benefited from Nyrstar's $190 million local procurement spend over the past 12 months according to figures released by the company today.

As its financial year closed at the end of September, figures show that Nyrstar Hobart's procurement spend in 2021-2022 was more than $190 million – with almost 75% of that staying in businesses in Tasmania.

Nyrstar's Hobart Operations General Manager Britt Butler says it was pleasing the Zinc Works was able to partner with over 330 local businesses and suppliers to run its Hobart site.

"For us at Nyrstar, we have a focus on creating greater value from Australia's minerals to deliver products globally while benefiting our local community and the State," Ms Butler said.

"Over the past few years, we have had a strong focus on local procurement and we have seen an increase in spending locally which has helped support hard working home-grown businesses and people.

"We have so many longstanding relationships and our local suppliers have built up detailed knowledge of our site operations, are valued business partners and critical to the ongoing success of our business," said Ms Butler.

Over 330 Tasmanian businesses have been contracted with or supplied goods to Nyrstar's Hobart Operations ranging from small to medium enterprises to major suppliers across a broad spectrum of products and services.

One of these suppliers is Tasweld, a locally owned and operated business employing around 35 staff in Hobart, Burnie and Launceston in Tasmania.

Tasweld have serviced the Tasmanian market with welding equipment and consumables since 1987 and have expanded to become one of the State's leading suppliers in safety products, personal protective equipment (PPE), work clothing and footwear.

Tasweld General Manager Alan Watt says the company is proud to be supplying safety footwear, and other consumables to the Nyrstar's Hobart Operations.

"Being local means we can be more responsive to our customers with shorter lead times on supplying products," Mr Watt said.

"Our business is based at Derwent Park and Nyrstar is located in the neighbouring suburb of Lutana so you really can't get more local than that.

"Supplying Nyrstar's Zinc Works has allowed us to employ two more people and we hope this is the beginning of a great, long-term partnership that will help our business grow," said Mr Watt.

Tasmanian Minister for Resources Felix Ellis MP said it's great news that Nyrstar is continuing its focus on local business and industries across the state.

"Nyrstar maximizes the value of Australia's minerals that leads to the manufacture of products critical to the community, our state and the world," Minister Ellis said.

"Crucially, Nyrstar's important work is supported by a talented and effective local supply chain which delivers economic benefits and employment across Tasmania.
