As a Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratory within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) enterprise, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)'s mission-focused research yields cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs with applications for both national security and U.S. economic competitiveness.
The Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Technology Transfer Annual Report, produced by LLNL's Innovation and Partnerships Office (IPO) - which also facilitates technology transfer for the Laboratory - highlights how industry partnerships accelerate innovation and deliver real-world impact. This is done through research collaborations that mature early-stage inventions, as well as licenses for LLNL technologies with market potential.
In FY25, LLNL reported 241 total copyrights, 96 issued U.S. patents and 90 new invention disclosures, illustrating the Laboratory's pipeline of technologies available for partnership. LLNL's total patent portfolio in FY25 was 1,614, with 363 active industry licenses.
Of the 10 new Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), five were with small businesses. Overall, LLNL's 51 active CRADAs in FY25 brought in $4.49 million in partner funds for collaborative research efforts with industry in a variety of areas.
LLNL's collaborations impact a range of industry applications including rare-earth elements, space, oil and gas, fusion energy and biomedical advances led by high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.
One of the standout FY25 success stories is the Laboratory's collaboration with Starris: Optimax Space Systems to expand the production of LLNL's next-generation space domain awareness technology. Under the CRADA, Starris will serve as the manufacturing partner that can scale production of LLNL's monolithic telescope technology - which won a 2025 R&D 100 Award - to meet the needs for proliferated constellations.
LLNL also hosted DOE's new Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of the Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) Anthony Pugliese, DOE's Chief of Staff for OTC Justin Bis and the National Laboratory Technology Transfer Committee annual retreat in FY25. Discussions included efforts to streamline Strategic Partnership Projects and CRADAs for greater efficiency to accelerate time to impact for mission innovation.
