Tasmanian Labor welcomes the agreement reached by Australia's Police Ministers to publicly consult on a national firearms register to improve police and community safety.
This agreement allowing Australians to give feedback on the plan brings Australia's first national register closer to reality, with Ministers set to meet again in June to discuss options ahead of the national cabinet meeting.
The Federal Labor Government's initiative to set up a national firearms register will enable police in every Australian jurisdiction to have access to accurate, up-to-date information to assess the risk of firearms and keep the public and themselves safe.
While Australia already has some of the world's strongest gun laws, a national register is needed to help prevent a repeat of the tragic events at Wieambilla in Queensland in December.
Any improvement to keep our police and communities safe has the support of Tasmanian Labor and we will continue to work with the Tasmanian community to achieve the best outcomes for everyone.
