Tasmanians building confidence in their future

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

Tasmania is leading the way in the purchase or construction of new dwellings.

The latest home lending figures show the number of loans to owner-occupiers in August for the purchase or construction of new dwellings has increased by a nation-leading 48.9 per cent.

Tasmania was the first state to sign onto HomeBuilder, we were the first state to pass associated legislation, and we were the first state to improve our approval and payment processes making it easier to gain finance. The Government's quick actions are clearly driving these strong results.

The number of new owner-occupier loans (excluding refinancing) in Tasmania grew by 24.5 per cent to 980 in August 2020, which again was the highest growth rate in the nation. Pleasingly, the number of first home buyer loans grew to 265.

These figures demonstrate Tasmanians remain confident in investing in the State's housing market and their future.

The Tasmanian HomeBuilder Grant is just one component of our Plan to Rebuild a Stronger Tasmania, including our $3.1 billion Construction Blitz over the next two years, stimulating investment in the private sector, strengthening the economy and creating thousands of jobs.
