Tasmania's Infrastructure Hits $40B Mark

Tasmania's booming building and construction pipeline is now worth close to $40 billion, up from $30 billion, with significant projects underway or planned over the next decade.

The majority of this investment is from the private sector, with the remainder made up of Government investment.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said Tasmania's latest 10-Year Infrastructure Pipeline update clearly demonstrated the strength of the construction sector and the growing investment opportunities across the state.

"Construction is booming in Tasmania, with our now $39.5 billion infrastructure pipeline over the next 10 years," Minister Vincent said.

"Just in the state's north west, we've recorded a $5.2 billion increase to $14.7 billion in the total value of projects for the region.

"This is primarily from the energy sector, which is planning $20.3 billion worth of investment across 75 projects throughout Tasmania, making it the pipeline's largest contributor.

"This data not only demonstrates that the Tasmanian Government is getting things done, but it's also a clear sign of confidence in our state and that we're well on the way to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse."

Planned investment in the state's south totals $10.9 billion, while $11.6 billion is slated for Tasmania's north and a further $2.1 billion is planned for statewide programs.

Minister Vincent said the pipeline served as an important platform for Tasmanian businesses.

"Tasmania is entering into an exciting period for infrastructure development over the next decade with 402 projects creating plenty of opportunities for Tasmanians," Minister Vincent said.

"The pipeline shows growth of $8.8 billion over the past year, which comes largely from the private sector, where projects have nearly doubled in value to more than $17 billion.

"We will work alongside the private sector to ensure they have the support they need to get this done, while Building Tasmania will efficiently drive the public works component."

With the successful completion of major projects like the $786 million New Bridgewater Bridge and the $750 million TasGRN digital radio network, the total value of government projects has reduced in the current reporting.

"This is a clear sign we are getting on and delivering for Tasmania and confidence remains high - this means jobs and training for future generations of Tasmanians," Minister Vincent said.

"Even with a reduction in overall government projects to around $7.8 billion, the private sector is going gangbusters."

The pipeline lists projects worth $5 million or more from Tasmanian Government agencies, government businesses, statutory authorities, local government and several private sector projects, filtered by region and sector.
