Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner following the death of a teenage boy in the Blue Mountains.
Officers attached to Blue Mountains Police Area Command have been told two boys, aged 16 and 17, travelled to Leura Train Station on Tuesday (27 January 2026), before making their way on foot to Mt Hay for a three-day camping trip.
About 5.45pm Wednesday (28 January 2026), the older boy activated his personal locator beacon after the two became separated.
A land and air search commenced and the 17-year-old boy was winched from the Acacia Flats camping ground; however, his 16-year-old companion was unable to be located.
The search continued involving local police along with Blue Mountains Rescue Squad, PolAir, NSW Ambulance paramedics, and the TOLL Rescue Helicopter.
About 1pm yesterday (Thursday 29 January 2026), the body of the missing boy was found in a creek in Blue Gum Forest, Blue Mountains National Park.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted in coming days to determine the cause of death, and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
