Stafford Police continue to target the use of non-complaint e-bike or bikes classed as unregistered electric motorcycles along the Kedron Brooke Bikeway during proactive patrols and enforcement action under Operation Xray Stamp.
The operation commenced in August following dangerous driving complaints being received from locals and has been extended until Christmas to continue to address community concerns.
The proactive patrols and enforcement action is in addition to ongoing engagement and education activities at local high schools.
On 24 October, a boy allegedly fled on an unregistered electric motorcycle from a marked police vehicle after an attempted intercept in the carpark of Mercer Park in Kedron.
It is further alleged the boy rode dangerously through the public space at speeds reaching 50km/h towards the Kedron Brook Bikeway.
He was subsequently arrested by two plain clothes police officers conducting proactive patrols.
The teen's "e-bike" was seized after it was identified to be able to ride up to 75km/h and 2040 watts and was legally classed as an unregistered electric motorcycle.
Further investigations determined the boy was linked to several other alleged dangerous driving complaints received by members of the public.
The boy was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act for 15 offences including three counts each of driving of motor vehicle without a driver licence never held licence, drive uninsured vehicle, vehicles used on the roads must be registered, two counts of fail to wear motorbike helmet, and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, unlawful driving of motorbike on public land, drive without due care and attention or drive without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, and evasion offence in company.
Acting Senior Sergeant Adam Hewton says that the illegal use of non-complaint e-bike or bikes classed as unregistered electric motorcycles will not be tolerated.
"We hear the community's concerns about the dangerous use and illegal operation of these devices along the Kedron Brooke Bikeway. This is a public space to be used by everyone, including families with young children and elderly locals."
"Many parents of riders and offenders don't realise how serious accidents related to the illegal operation of these devices can be. Just as you shouldn't let your young unlicenced teenager drive an unregistered car, you shouldn't let them ride unlicenced on an unregistered electric motorbike that can travel up to speeds of 75km/h in public spaces."
"Police are first responders to many accidents where someone has come off one of these devices and suffered significant injuries or in some cases has died as a result of their injuries."
"This enforcement action isn't about preventing kids from having fun. It is about preventing serious injuries or fatalities as a direct consequence of illegal or dangerous riding. We don't want parents to have to receive a phone call or knock on their door because their child has died or is responsible for an accident that caused someone else's death."
