  • Tender released for bulk earthworks for Spoilbank Marina project
  • $121.5 million marina aims to transform Port Hedland's waterfront into vibrant and attractive destination for locals and visitors
  • Project expected to create more than 200 jobs during construction
  • The tender for bulk earthworks for the multi-million dollar Spoilbank Marina in Port Hedland has been released to the market.

    The successful tenderer will be tasked with excavating the marina basin, selected breakwaters and revetments for this significant stage of the project. Works are expected to begin in January 2021.

    Businesses can apply for the tender through the Tenders WA website (http://www.tenders.wa.gov.au). Registered tenderers will also receive notifications when other packages of works for the project are released.

    In June, the McGowan Government launched a Pilbara business register through the Pilbara Development Commission to allow local businesses to register their interest for this transformative community project.

    A total of 98 businesses, including 87 which have an office based in the Pilbara, have expressed their interest.

    Pilbara Ports Authority will lead the delivery of the construction of the Spoilbank Marina, working closely with its project partners, Department of Transport, DevelopmentWA, Pilbara Development Commission and the Town of Port Hedland.

    Features of the Spoilbank Marina development include:

    • a four-lane boat ramp;
    • 21 boat-pen marina with capacity to expand to 80 pens in the future;
    • separate entrance channel to the main shipping channel;
    • trailer parking for up to 200 vehicles;
    • maintenance hardstand;
    • publicly accessible breakwaters with pedestrian path;
    • public recreation and event space and public amenities;
    • waterfront promenade to reflect the Yintha Kariyarra creation serpent story; and
    • public art and a cultural gathering space.

    As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

    "The release of this tender is a major step in the McGowan Government's delivery of this long-awaited project for the Port Hedland community.

    "Not only will the marina alleviate demand on existing boat launching facilities in Port Hedland, it will create a transformative waterfront development in the Pilbara for locals and visitors to enjoy.

    "The Spoilbank Marina is a great opportunity for local businesses to secure work on this government project, which will see more than 200 jobs created during construction and helping to support the State recovery from the economic impacts of COVID-19."

    As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

    "This is another important milestone for the Spoilbank Marina project.

    "It is fantastic to see more than 80 businesses with a Pilbara presence express their interest in working on the project - this will help to ensure local business has the best possible chance at securing work from the project.

    "I look forward to earthworks getting underway in January."
