The next milestone in the $40 million Shoalhaven Roads Package is underway, with Council calling for tenders to construct two key roundabouts that will improve safety and traffic flow on the region's road network.
Funded by the Australian Government, the intersection works form part of a package of six roads being upgraded across Shoalhaven. The new roundabouts are proposed for:
- the intersection of Callala Bay Road, Forest Road, Currarong Road and Coonemia Road, and
- the intersection of Worrigee Road, Greenwell Point Road and Millbank Road.
Tenders opened on 30 July 2026 and will close at 10am on 10 September 2026, with the successful contractor to be appointed following the evaluation process.
Mayor Patricia White said the projects marked an important step forward in delivering safer roads for the community.
"These intersections have been identified for safety and traffic improvements, and the construction of roundabouts will help make them safer and more efficient for all road users," Cr White said.
"Going to tender is a significant milestone for the Shoalhaven Roads Package and demonstrates the program is progressing from planning and design into delivery," she said.
"Once a contractor has been appointed, we can expect to see work begin in early 2027."
Federal Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips said she was pleased to see the Albanese Labor Government's $40 million Shoalhaven Roads Package taking shape.
"As a long-time local of this area, I know how important these upgrades are for the safety of drivers and our loved ones," Mrs Phillips said.
"I advocated for these road projects on behalf of our community, and I'm proud to have secured the $40 million funding delivered through the 2022-23 October Budget."
Both new roundabouts will:
- improve road safety by reducing vehicle speeds
- improve traffic flow and help reduce delays at the intersection
- make the intersection easier to navigate by simplifying vehicle movements
- support cars, buses, heavy vehicles and agricultural vehicles
- provide improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Major works are expected to begin in February 2027, with preliminary works such as vegetation removal, telecommunications adjustments, electrical and watermain relocations potentially starting beforehand.
About the $40 million Shoalhaven Roads Package
There are four roads and two intersections being upgraded as part of the package. Estimated construction timeframes are outlined below and will be confirmed once works contracts have been awarded.
- Callala Bay Road / Forest Road / Coonemia Road intersection (roundabout): February 2027 to August 2027
- Worrigee Road / Greenwell Point Road intersection (roundabout): February 2027 to August 2027
- Forest Road: April 2027 to October 2027
- Callala Bay Road: April 2027 to October 2027
- Callala Beach Road: September 2027 to February 2028
- Culburra Road: September 2027 to February 2028
