Tenders called for new stage of Great Eastern Drive upgrade

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

Tenders are now open for upgrades to the Tasman Highway, between Basin Creek and St Helens, the next stage of improvements to the Great Eastern Drive.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is rolling out our record infrastructure program, as well as fast-tracking and investing even more into job-creating infrastructure as part of our COVID-19 recovery package.

Our program of works is providing security and supporting jobs in the civil construction industry, with works already underway across Tasmania's roads and highways, and eight projects currently out for tender.

The Great Eastern Drive is a 176 kilometre section of the Tasman Highway from Orford to St Helens. The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering a series of upgrades along this route as part of our Road Package to support Tasmania's Visitor Economy.

The aim is to improve access to the region's iconic attractions for visitors while also providing a safer and more convenient road environment for all road users.

The Basin Creek to St Helens stage will add two dedicated overtaking lanes, and widen and re-align the road at specific points.

The work will improve sight distances and reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

Tenders close on September 23, 2020, and work is scheduled to take place during the 2020-21 construction season.
