Media Release From waiting list to welcome mat: Housing milestone in Tennant Creek

4 June 2025

The CLP Finocchiaro Government has delivered a $3.4 million project to increase the availability of public housing in Tennant Creek, with the completion of six new modern units.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development and Member for Barkly Steve Edgington said the one-bedroom homes mark another milestone in the CLP Government's commitment to delivering safe, secure and affordable housing across the Territory.

"The new units will provide a fresh start for people who need a safe place to call home. That includes people on low incomes, people trying to get ahead, and people who deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.

"In our year of action, certainty and security, we're delivering real change on the ground-improving housing, boosting local jobs, relieving pressure on the social housing waitlist system and giving Territorians a better quality of life."

Built by Alice Springs-based Aboriginal Business Enterprise Blueprint (NT) Construction, the housing project has strengthened regional capacity and supported the local economy.

It follows the successful delivery of four one-bedroom units on Peko Road in 2024 by Alice Springs-based Asbuild NT and forms part of a $5 million rolling program to refresh the Territory's public housing stock in urban areas.

Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said getting more people into safe and affordable housing was a key priority, and building on strong partnerships with Territory-based companies enabled the CLP Government to deliver more for our communities.

"Working with this investment shows real, on-the-ground results-ensuring more people have access to safe, secure housing when they need it most and creating job opportunities for local workers during construction," said Mr Yan.

"By backing Territory businesses, we're delivering homes that meet local needs-and we're supporting jobs and economic growth at the same time."

"This is about more than buildings. It's about building up people, skills and communities."

Matt Cunningham, Project Manager of Blueprint (NT) Construction said the project had strong local participation.

"More than 20 per cent of the workforce on this build was from Tennant Creek-including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous locals," said.

"It's good for the community when local workers and suppliers are part of the solution-it keeps the benefits right here where they belong."

Earlier this year, the CLP Government announced the completion of a $6.9 million joint project which delivered 12 new social and affordable homes in Tennant Creek.

That milestone was achieved through a partnership between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments under the Barkly Regional Deal, along with Housing Australia and Venture Housing.

"These projects show what's possible when governments and communities work together," Mr Edgington said.

"We're not just investing in housing-we're investing in the future of Territorians and restoring certainty, security and the lifestyle people deserve."
