Term 2 Learning for Tasmanian Government School Students

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

The Tasmanian Government understands how important it is for parents and students to have some certainty around what is planned for Government school students for Term 2, with teachers leading this learning.

We know the challenges resulting from COVID-19 are not limited to weeks, they will be over many months, and it is our expectation that most students will continue to learn at home during Term 2.

Next week, teachers will be dedicating time to finalise Term 2 learning from home for their students and they will be carefully considering the individual needs of their students as well as the overall class.

Teachers will provide an overview of what the student's days should entail along with activities suited to individual learning needs to support them to practice skills and deepen their understanding.

Parents are not expected to be the experts – their most important role is to continue to encourage children to engage and stay interested in their learning, remembering that the student's teacher is still their teacher, and the Principal is still their Principal.

This may be a challenge at times, but what we know without doubt is that by staying home, Tasmanians are doing the very best thing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and save lives.

Supporting student wellbeing is incredibly important at this time so I encourage parents to help students feel connected by communicating with schools through familiar platforms such as the school newsletter, email, social media or by phone.

If you have to send your children to school, we will continue to provide a safe environment for them and support their learning.

This situation will be regularly reviewed based on Public Health advice and updates.

Thank you for your patience and support as we navigate this together. I am confident that we have the processes, practices, teachers and support staff to support your child to be a connected, resilient, creative and curious thinker.

All government school students will return on Tuesday 28 April, with Monday 27th being a student-free day.
