New laws passed today establish the legal framework for Territory digital driver licences.
Optional digital licences will give Territorians a secure and convenient alternative to carry and display their licence on their smartphone.
Strong security features will help protect personal information at no additional cost.
The Finocchiaro CLP Government has today passed new laws paving the way for the Northern Territory's first-ever digital driver licence, giving Territorians the option to carry their licence on their smartphone.
The Motor Vehicles Amendment (Digital Licences) Bill 2026 establishes the legal framework for eligible Territorians to carry and display a secure digital version of their driver licence.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said passing the legislation marked an important step towards delivering greater security and convenience for Territory motorists.
"This is a practical reform that cuts red tape and makes an everyday government service easier to use," Minister Yan said.
He said Territorians would retain the choice to use their physical driver licence.
"Digital licences are entirely optional. Territorians are under no obligation to use them and can continue using a physical card," Minister Yan said.
Minister for Corporate and Digital Development Joshua Burgoyne said this was another way the CLP Government was making life easier for Territorians, many who already carry their phone everywhere they go.
"This legislation will enable the development of the digital driver licence, which will be great for Territorians to have the option to carry their licence on their phones," Minister Burgoyne said.
Once available, the NT digital driver licence will be able to be used to prove a person's authority to drive, confirm they are over 18 and verify their identity in participating situations.
The digital licence is being built to internationally recognised standards, with strong security features designed to protect personal information and reduce fraud.
