Théâtre des Deux Rives and Cabaret-Théâtre du Vieux-Saint-Jean Modernizing Their Equipment

SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, Quebec - April 25, 2019

Today, the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, announced $135,000 in funding for the Société pour la production d'événements culturels du Haut-Richelieu (The Upper Richelieu Society for the Promotion of Cultural Events).

This amount includes $75,000 from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund to acquire specialized equipment needed to broadcast shows. It also includes $60,000 from the Canada Arts Presentation Fund to support programming for the 2019-2020 season.

Theaters and other venues play a key role in promoting our culture across the country. That's why the Government of Canada is honoured to support their activities and modernization projects. These initiatives help communities across Canada enjoy the arts and quality cultural content.

  • The Société pour la promotion d'événements culturels du Haut-Richelieu or Upper Richelieu Society for the Promotion of Cultural Events (SPEC) was founded in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu in 1989. Its mission is to promote artistic, cultural and community activities and cultural development in the greater Upper Richelieu area.

  • The SPEC du Haut-Richelieu presents a wide range of performances at the Théâtre des Deux Rives and Cabaret-Théâtre du Vieux-Saint-Jean and hosts 150 to 175 performances on a yearly basis.

  • The project that will receive funding from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund will involve acquiring state-of-the-art sound and projection equipment to replace outdated items. This is the first of two phases of funding to acquire the necessary equipment in the short- to medium-term.

  • The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund helps bolster the quality of equipment to support innovation in the arts, heritage and creative fields. The Fund supports renovation and construction projects, the acquisition of specialized equipment and conducting feasibility studies on cultural spaces.

  • The Canada Arts Presentation Fund provides funding to organizations that host arts festivals or seasonal professional-performance programs. The Fund also supports organizations that back arts broadcasters.
