Every year across this vast area up to 45 million hectares is burnt out - that is more than six times the size of Tasmania.
However effective bushfire management including successful prescribed burning in collaboration with Traditional Owners across the Kimberley aims to significantly decrease the risk. As part of the forum, these Western Australian success stories will be showcased to other jurisdictions.
Agency leaders, scientists, and meteorologists will also share their experiences, research and innovations to address emerging issues such as rising temperatures and climate change.
The WA State Government recently committed $3.1 million towards an expanded State Bushfire Mitigation Branch which will continue to help drive this work across the State.
The 2025 forum is hosted by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services in partnership with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
As stated by Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia:
"Northern Australia is one of the most fire-prone places on earth with a unique landscape that requires its own approach to bushfire management.
"This forum brings together the best bushfire management minds to make Australia a safer and stronger place.
"The Kimberley is the perfect place to host this forum, home to proud Indigenous cultures and Traditional Owners with a deep knowledge of the land, a well-equipped emergency service, dedicated land care specialists and pastoralists all working together for effective fire management.
"Hosting the NAFM Forum is an incredible way to highlight our State's many success stories and continue the momentum into the future."
