Three Taken To Hospital After Maroubra Unit Fire

Three people have been taken to hospital following a unit fire in Sydney's east this morning.

Emergency services were called to Portland Crescent, Maroubra, about 4.15am (Sunday 31 August 2025), after a second-storey apartment was seen alight.

A 79-year-old man escaped the unit; however, his 74-year-old partner was trapped inside until a 49-year-old neighbour was able enter and help the woman out.

She has suffered severe burns and has been taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious condition.

Both men have been taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for the treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation. They are reported to be in a stable condition.

The unit block was evacuated as a precaution while the fire was brought under control by Fire and Rescue NSW. The fire was contained to the unit; however, there has been some smoke and water damage to adjoining units.

A crime scene has been established by officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command. It will be examined by specialist Scene of Crime Officers and Fire Investigators later today to confirm the cause.
