Three Ways To Celebrate Halloween More Sustainably

Each October, Halloween is an increasingly popular day for families and communities to get together and celebrate.

If you're starting to plan for Halloween at the end of the month, here are our top 3 tips to make more environmentally friendly choices:

Tip 1: Source your spooky costumes and decorations second hand

Buying second-hand from local op shops or the Camberwell Sunday Market can be a great way to find and re-use items for costumes and decorations this Halloween.

Check our Shopping sustainably page for second-hand stores near you.

Tip 2: Protect our wildlife

Did you know fake spiderweb decorations are harmful for wildlife?

Birds use spider silk to build their nests and can't tell the difference between real and fake webbing, which can entangle birds and their young.

Tip 3: Make thoughtful decorating choices and get crafty

Instead of single-use decorations that end up in landfill, consider alternatives such as:

  • making your own decorations from cardboard, empty bottles and cans
  • buying cardboard decorations that can be reused and recycled

Once the Halloween celebrations are over, you can also dispose of any leftovers from your pumpkin carving in your FOGO bin. Remember to remove any decorations that aren't compostable first.
