Would you like to take a peek behind the curtain at Camden Council?

Look no further than Council's exciting new Behind The Scenes campaign, in celebration of Local Government Week. Council will be posting seven videos to its social media pages, which will take you through a day in the life of staff members from across the organisation. You'll learn about exciting roles, projects and facilities from waste collection and disposal; asset management; the Nepean River Trail and Camden Town Farm; volunteer and community programs; the world-class Oran Park Leisure Centre; and the Leppington program.

Local Government Week, which begins today (Monday 4 August) and will run until Sunday 10 August, aims to help move the conversation beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important and far-reaching role councils play as the hubs of their community. As a sector, local councils are responsible for pools, parks and playgrounds, libraries, local festivals and lighting, cemeteries, childcare centres, community infrastructure and so much more.

Council will also hold its traditional Mayor for a Day public speaking competition on Wednesday (6 August). Local schools are invited to nominate a Year Six student to represent their school and present a three-minute speech on why they would like to be the Mayor of Camden and what they would do for the Camden area. Mayor of Camden, Ashleigh Cagney, said the speeches would be judged on presentation, knowledge of local government and the Camden area, as well as their improvement ideas.

"Both the winner and runner up will be announced on the day and will receive a Harry Hartog gift voucher. I'll also show the winner the Mayoral robe and chains, as well as a tour of my office, which is always so exciting," she said.

"Local Government Week holds a special place in my heart, and I think it's so important that we acknowledge and celebrate it. There's so much more to your local council than you think and so much excitement and innovation to come out of our staff and projects.

"This week is the perfect excuse to really sing loudly and proudly about the services we offer and the work we do all year round."
