Too many kittens leads to further reduction in adoption fees

Greater Shepparton City Council has again reduced adoption fees on cats and kittens due to the large number of abandoned animals available at the Animal Shelter.

Cats over 12 months of age are now $20 with kittens only $50. The regular fee is $100 for both cats and kittens. There are currently 50 cats ready to go to new homes now.

All cats are de-sexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for worms and fleas, and vet checked avoiding the need for new owners to do anything except show their new pet lots of love. All pets are registered at the time of adoption if being re-homed in Greater Shepparton or with their own council.

"Our Shelter staff care deeply about all the animals in their care and want nothing more than to see these loveable cats and kittens go to good homes," said Director Sustainable Development, Geraldine Christou.

"Over the last few months there has been an influx of animals at shelters around the state. The increase in abandoned cats and kittens is not unique to Greater Shepparton however our facility has limited space and we are looking for new forever homes for them."

"The Shelter has experienced pregnant cats, cats with litters and kittens being surrendered. Cats can breed at a very young age which is why it is important to have them de-sexed when old enough."

"Adopting an animal from the Animal Shelter is a rewarding experience for both our community and animals," said Ms Christou. "Our staff are working hard to find the right home for each animal, and want to ensure every new home is long lasting and the right fit."

"If you need help adopting a pet, please reach out to our staff at the Animal Shelter. Prices for kittens are $50 and prices for cats over 12 months of age is $20 for a limited time. We look forward to connecting these rehomed pets with their forever families."

Residents can visit the Shepparton Animal Shelter on Wanganui Road by appointment to meet the animals available for adoption and to make an application.
