Amid growing pressures on groundwater resources in Morocco, including recurrent droughts and increasing demand for water, ESCWA, in coordination with the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the Tensift Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHT), organized a national consultative meeting to assess the groundwater governance of the Oulad Bousbaa aquifer system in the Marrakech-Tensift region.
Held on 9 and 10 June, the meeting brought together representatives of public institutions, river basin agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to discuss groundwater governance issues. The national study team also applied the Groundwater Governance Assessment Tool developed by ESCWA for the Arab region, to evaluate the selected aquifer system.
Discussions resulted in a set of practical recommendations aimed at improving groundwater governance and further refining the assessment tool to enhance its scalability and adaptability across different contexts in the region.
