Tools for its implementation through heritage and creativity in Latin America and Caribbean

The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, in coordination with UN-Habitat and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, is convening the Regional Seminar on Sustainable Urban Development: Tools for its implementation through heritage and creativity in Latin America and the Caribbean

The seminar is aimed at cultural managers dedicated to urban transformation initiatives in Latin America and the Caribbean. Among other objectives, it aims to contribute to capacity building for the Regional Action Plan for the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean using instruments to guide culturally sustainable urbanisation in cities and human settlements in the region while harnessing the potential of heritage and creativity.

Since October 2019, the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, UN-Habitat and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network have promoted the preparation of a guide on how to introduce heritage and culture into Sustainable Urban Development through practical examples and proposals, providing a tool for improving the responsible use of heritage and creativity in urban interventions.

The guide focuses on two key milestones for cities: the designation of 2021 as the International Year of the Creative Economy for Sustainable Development by the United Nations - a key area for improving prosperity in urban environments - and the declaration of 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. Both are core themes of UNESCO's work and are priorities for UN-Habitat in relation to urban conflict reduction.

Since 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted Latin American and Caribbean cities. Today's challenges require collaborative responses in which the linkage of international and multilateral cooperation instruments will be key. It is the ideal moment to reflect upon what we have done and how to apply this knowledge and these instruments to transform the unsustainability of our cities.
