Toowoomba Region artist captures natural environment in site-specific drawing works

Toowoomba Region artist Naomi Hatt has unveiled a new body of work titled, We Came for the Trees, which is on display at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery until Sunday, May 30.

Naomi said her debut solo exhibition included drawings of native flora and fauna species she has observed near her home on the eastern Darling Downs escarpment.

She said the works were reminiscent of scientific studies and reflected her interest in natural history and concerns for the environment.

"Walking helps me notice, solitude lets me listen and drawing makes me see," Naomi said.

Created over a two-year period, and using mainly graphite and charcoal on paper, this body of work includes birds, animals and plant species that have been carefully selected by way of personal encounters.
