Every weekend in Townsville was filled with events and activities, as the city hosted more than 180 Townsville City Council-supported community and civic events during the last financial year.
Council's Annual Report was endorsed at October's Ordinary Council Meeting and highlighted its work towards making Townsville a sustainable destination that embraced and participated in arts, sports, events and recreational activities.
During 2022/23 there were 87 community events, 93 civic events, 136 performances at the Civic Theatre and more than 24,700 visitors to Perc Tucker Regional Gallery and Pinnacles Gallery.
Community and Cultural Development Committee acting chairperson Liam Mooney said Council was proud of the work it did to engage the community and further improve Townsville's liveability.
"Through Council support our city was able to host events ranging from the always popular Townsville 500 Supercars event to Our Townsville, Shakespeare Under the Stars, North Australian Festival of Arts, Junior State Age Netball Championship, Carols by Candlelight and more," Cr Mooney said.
"Through our grants and partnerships program we supported local community groups and organisations with $1.06 million in grant and partnership funding.
"Our local arts scene was boosted by the reopening of Pinnacles Gallery beside the newly opened Citylibraries Riverway.
"We also completed our biggest outdoor street art project with murals painted across a length of more than 160 metres of wall at High Range Drive.
"The 2022/23 financial year was another big 12 months of activity in Townsville and has continued to support our community at the grass roots and strengthen Townsville's reputation as the events, arts and sports capital of northern Australia."
