Townsville Correctional Centre (TCC) and Townsville Women's Correctional Centre (TWCC) are coming together this week to embrace and celebrate as part of NAIDOC celebrations.
NAIDOC Week, running between 7 - 14 July, is celebrating the rich and dynamic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture and this year's national theme is VOICE.TREATY.TRUTH.
There are a number of events being held over the space of the next few weeks at both TCC and TWCC to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
Prisoners at the TCC will be involved in a number of workshops which include weaving, singing, dancing, shaker making, storytelling and weaving.
The TWCC will host a flag raising ceremony as well as a lunch with local elders before women prisoners engage in a number of cultural activities such a story telling, dancing, singing, weaving and painting.
General Manager Peter Hall said that QCS continue to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners to provide necessary rehabilitation and support while respecting their heritage as well as promoting strong ties back to country.
"The QCS acknowledges the traditional owners of the land that we work and live on, and we support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and their rich and diverse culture." Mr Hall said.
"Their connection to country runs long and deep, and international research suggests that supporting those in our care to keep strong connections to community and country will assist in their rehabilitation and reduce their chances of reoffending."
"In the spirit of NAIDOC, let's work together for a shared future."
