Traffickable cannabis seizure - Groote Eylandt

Police in Alyangula have charged a 30-year-old male after a traffickable quantity of cannabis was allegedly found in his possession.

112 grams of the prohibited drug was detected by Drug Detection Dog Lena at the Groote Eylandt Airport before the male was arrested and conveyed to the Alyangula Police Station on 7 May 2019.

Senior Sergeant and Officer in Charge at Groote Eylandt Tanya Woodcock said police will not stop their efforts in disrupting the supply of illegal and harmful substances to the community.

"Cannabis is currently fetching $150 per gram on Groote Eylandt, meaning this person could have taken nearly $17,000 from vulnerable families," Senior Sergeant Woodcock said.

"We want Groote to be a safe place for all, and we will continue to target those who try to bring harm."
