Toowoomba Regional Council has joined Zonta's 16 days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence campaign.
At a special Flag Raising ceremony in the Village Green adjacent to City Hall this morning (Tuesday 25 November), community leaders joined the Zonta Club of Toowoomba Area Inc, Zonta Club of Toowoomba Garden City and Zonta e-Club of Queensland to mark the beginning of the campaign.
Toowoomba City landmarks, including Victoria Street Bridge and The Annex will also light up in orange from tonight until November 30 to mark the campaign.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald spoke at this morning's ceremony and said the event was another important opportunity to raise awareness of the terrible impacts of violence against women and children in the community.
"Today we committed to doubling down on our efforts to eliminate violence in our community, especially violence against women and children.
"Our efforts locally recognise and draw on the ethos of the United Nations' campaign that marks the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We also mark the start of Zonta's 16 Days of Activism to end violence," Mayor McDonald said.
"The upholding of human rights should be in our consciousness every day. I'm positive that our combined efforts can educate our community and reverse the cycle of violence.
I am pleased to see school and community groups voicing their opposition to violence.
"I acknowledge Zonta, Protea Place, Amnesty International, plus emergency services personnel and community support agencies for working tirelessly to support victims while championing attitudinal changes," he said.
