Bayside's trees will receive additional help to grow and establish themselves as part of a new tree planting service contract.
Council has appointed Melbourne Treeworks to undertake tree planting services across the entire Bayside municipality.
All newly planted trees will receive fortnightly inspections and maintenance visits during their first 12 months following planting.
During the second 12 months, trees will be inspected monthly and receive watering based on soil moisture conditions, weed control, mulch replenishment, inspection and adjustment of stakes and ties, monitoring of tree health and vigour, formative pruning and replacement of failed trees where required.
This proactive approach enables issues to be identified and addressed earlier during the critical establishment phase.
Melbourne Treeworks will plant about 1,400 trees each calendar year, with the planting occurring generally between May and September to maximise their chances of success and to take advantage of favourable seasonal conditions.
Ongoing tree planting is essential to replace ageing tree populations, increase canopy cover and support the objectives of Council's Urban Forest Strategy 2022-2040.
Established tree canopies help with urban heat, improve air quality, enhance biodiversity, contribute to stormwater management and improve the liveability of streets, parks and open spaces.
Melbourne Treeworks partners with four other councils across Melbourne for tree planting services.
This project aligns with Themes 1, 2 and 4 of the Bayside 2050 Community Vision, and Goals 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.2, 2.3 and 3 of the Council Plan 2025-2029.
