Trump Seeks to Delay Until April 2026

Former U.S. President Donald Trump's legal team is pushing for a trial in April 2026 regarding federal charges alleging Trump's attempt to overturn his 2020 election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. The proposed timeline would set the trial after the November 2024 U.S. election, where Trump is currently leading the race for the Republican nomination.

"The public interest lies in justice and fair trial, not a rush to judgment," stated the attorneys for Trump on Thursday.

This move comes in response to a request from U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith, the lead prosecutor in the federal case against Trump regarding the 2020 election. Smith previously asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to initiate the trial on Jan. 2, 2024. This proposed date is notably just two weeks before the commencement of the 2024 Republican presidential primary.

Meanwhile, authorities in Georgia said they are investigating threats against members of the grand jury that indicted Trump and 18 of his allies.
